From our humble beginnings of 12 charter members over 40 years ago, we have grown to twenty plus young men (ages 6 to 17) each Saturday. Each young man knows he is expected to earn a college degree. We have partnered with local universities to provide tutoring for each young man every month, along with other meaningful support. The program has a 100% high school graduation rate, and 100% of our high school graduates attend college. Since our founding in 1984, five Saturday Boys Men have graduated cum laude (“with honors”) from Morehouse College, Dr. Harrison’s alma mater
To become a program volunteer for the weekly Saturday activities, a man must first genuinely care about our children and have a passion for helping them grow and develop. He must be willing to show up regularly and participate in an orientation session. He must obey our “hands off” policy regarding how we provide discipline and be willing to submit to a background check to confirm no record of child abuse. Our men volunteers are a special group of gentlemen dedicated to the young men in the program. We are always looking for a “few more good men.”
Special Expectations for SBA High School Members
Maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale.
SAT score: 1,120 points on a 1,600-point scale
ACT score: 26 points on a 36-point scale
Every young man, ages 5 through 18, must be enrolled in school full-time except during the summer months. There is no cost to participate. All new members and their parents or guardians must attend an orientation session on the first Saturday of the month before participating in regularly scheduled activities.
Meeting Schedule
Saturday Boys Academy (SBA) meets every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. unless otherwise notified in writing. Occasionally, the program may take a special field trip, which will extend our meeting time by one to three hours. The program does not meet on the Saturday after Thanksgiving, the Saturday after Christmas, or the Saturday before Easter. Annually, we go on a summer College Tour during late summer.
Saturday Boys Academy is a federally chartered 501-c(3) not-for-profit organization. We have several fundraisers annually to cover operational costs and supplies. We also solicit corporate, trust, and foundation contributions from entities that support worthwhile 501- c(3) organizations such as ourselves.
The St. Louis Board of Aldermen recognizes Saturday Boys Academy as a top mentoring program in St. Louis for National Mentoring Month. Board Members Alan Green (L) and Byron Price (R) accept the resolution at the ceremony on January 30th.
