Manhood, Leadership & Development Group Building men is better than mending boys
From our humble beginnings of 12 charter members over 27 years ago we have grown to more than 50 young men (ages 6 to 17) each Saturday. Each young man knows he is expected to earn a college degree. We have partnered with Washington University and other local universities to provide tutoring to each young man every month, along with other meaningful support. The program has a 100% high graduation rate and 100% of our high school graduates attend college. Since our founding in 1984, five St. Paul Saturday Men have graduated cum laude (“with honors”) from Morehouse College, Dr. Harrison’s alma mater
To become a program volunteer for the weekly Saturday activities, a man must first genuinely care about our children and have a passion for helping them grow and develop. He must be willing to show up on a regular basis and be willing to participate in an orientation session. He must obey our “hands off” policy regarding how we provide discipline and be willing to submit to a police check to confirm no record of child abuse. Our men volunteers are a special group of gentlemen dedicated to the young men in the program. We are always looking for a “few more good men.”
Special Expectations for Saturday Boys Academy High School Men • Maintain at least a 3.0 grade point average (GPA) on a 4.0 scale. • SAT score: 1,700 points on a 2,400-point scale. • ACT score: 26 points on a 36-point scale
Every young man ages 5 through 18 is expected to be enrolled in school full time except during summer months. There is no cost to participate. All new members and their parents or guardians must attend a two hour orientation session on the first Saturday of the month before participating in regularly scheduled activities. Saturday Boys Academy (SBA) meets every Saturday from 9:00 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. unless otherwise notified in writing. On occassion the program may take a special field trip, which will extend our meeting time by one to three hours. The program does not meet on the Saturdays after Thanksgiving and Christmas or the Saturday before Easter. Annually, we go on a summer College Tour during late summer.
